Senior Professor Dr. Phan Le Ha, Lead of the International and Comparative Education Research Group (ICE)

In early 2019, Phan Le Ha initiated the International and Comparative Education Research Group (ICE) at UBD and has been leading it since then. ICE has been inspired and informed by Professor Phan’s decades of research, teaching and community service in many countries around the world.

In early 2019, Phan Le Ha initiated the International and Comparative Education Research Group (ICE) at UBD and has been leading it since then. ICE has been inspired and informed by Professor Phan’s decades of research, teaching and community service in many countries around the world.

Dr. Phan Le Ha (Phan is family name) is Senior Professor in the Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Institute of Education (SHBIE) at Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD). She had been tenured Full Professor at the Department of Educational Foundations, College of Education, University of Hawaii at Manoa until July 2019 and still maintains her affiliation with her Department in Hawaii as Graduate Affiliate Faculty. Prior to joining University of Hawaii at Manoa, Phan Le Ha had been lecturing in the Faculty of Education, Monash University, Melbourne, Australia. She has also held visiting and honorary academic positions in Australia, Malaysia, Vietnam, and the UK. She is the founder of Engaging With Vietnam, an annual academic conference series, which has been very active for more than a decade.

Over the years, Professor Phan has been teaching, doing research, publishing and supervising/advising Honours, MA and PhD students on areas of her expertise and interests including identity-language-pedagogy-culture studies, international/transnational higher education, educational mobilities, TESOL, the globalization and internationalization of education, and sociology of knowledge and education. Her scholarship and teaching have covered a variety of regions and contexts, with a particular focus on Australia, Southeast Asia, East Asia, and the Asia-Pacific and the Gulf regions.

Alongside her academic endeavours, Professor Phan enjoys writing songs, poetry, short stories and novels in Vietnamese and English. She likes going to fresh open markets, learning about different vegetables, fruits and food preparations, as well as interacting with everyday people. She likes singing too, but be careful if she sings :)!
